Ghetto is as Ghetto does

When will the rampant over usage of the term "ghetto" stop? I can't take it. Really. I mean am I truly supposed to believe that you, a little white girl from suburbia, have the slightest clue what a ghetto looks like? "It was soooo ghetto." If I hear this one more time I'm gonna scream. Ok I shouldn't say that. Because I hear it no less than 5xs a day. You know I'm prone to slight fits of exaggeration and drama, but that is a fact. Today I will count. We're already at two and its only 6 a.m. Four hours left in the day. That's only 3 left. I will absolutely give el update-o (you love my spanish, i know).

Here's my deal. Now I know that black people don't have the ghetto on lock, but when your only image of the ghetto and "ghetto people" is what you see in a Jeezy video, I beg of you. Stop with the ghetto. Seriously. If you don't know what you're talking about, just shut up. I'm finishing this book called Its the Little Things: Things that Get Under the Skin of Blacks and Whites or something to that effect. And its about workplace/school/life things that irritate blacks and whites about each other. That's definitely one of them for me. I just always wonder if by ghetto you mean black. And if you also think that everything bad is black. And if all things black in your mind are backwards, poorly done and dysfunctional. Of course someone out there thinks I'm overreacting but I have issues with that train of thought, too.

Overreacting. How can you tell someone what should and should not offend them? This girl I have the misfortune of being around said she didn't get why something she said was offensive. She claims she has a black friend that she says it around and the girl doesn't care. Umm... FYI, your "friend" cannot be your black spokesperson. She cannot tell you how every black person (all 15 or so million of us) will think, react or feel to any given subject at any given time. You know why? Because its not possible!! And because if she's hanging around you, she probably ain't that black anyway. OOOOOH! I know that hurt. I'm just saying tho. If you hang around someone and call them your friend and they have such questionable taste in racial matters, I will reserve the right to call your blackness into question.

Which brings me to another thing. The "stupid negro questions." You know the ones. Like, "So are Black people really as mad about the confederate flag thing as they seem on tv?" Hmmm. Wait a minute, we at the black coalition haven't discussed that yet. I will use my smoke signal and african drums to contact them. Together we will follow the drinking gourd to funga alafia ashay ashay.

you're wrong for the african drum comment...LOL!

here's my rule: if any white person has one black friend, the one black friend is almost certainly not a negro.

come to think of it, the "one black friend" is a true enemy of black folks. hmm, i'mma have to blog about this myself.

I cussed out a white girl for saying something is ghetto. As someone who is from "the ghetto", I get pissed whenI hear white people call everything ghetto.

I'm with you. I have lived in the GHET-TO for years (Mattapan hasn't been dubbed "Murderpan" for nothing). As a person of a pale persuasion (alebeit Latina), I can't stand when suburban white folk use the term "ghetto". If by "ghetto" you mean resourceful and scrupulous, then yes -- use the term. But, if you mean the noun describing what has been a socially designated "reservation" for a marginalized people, to connote something negative, then no. You can't use that word, you sheltered, advantaged, ignorant b*tch. Why don't you come to my house this weekend? Oh, what's that? You're afraid? I thought so. Dubma$$! Like Treach said, "If you ain ever been to the ghetto, don't ever come to the ghetto. Cuz you wouldn't understand the ghetto. So stay the f*ck out of the ghetto!" and keep it out yo eva-lovin mouth! Sorry - I may have to write about this, cuz it pushed a button, apparently. LOL

African drums and smoke signals.....LOL. Hey, wait, you'd probably like this film called Smoke Signals. It's an indie film about these two friends and they bring up Native American sterotypes throughout the film in a very humourous way. Not African American but, same idea about what you are talking about and a good story to boot. Just a thought.

ok why am I just getting here today? Is you my long lost sista? When Katie Couric referred to something as ghetto on the Today Show it was a WRAP for me. Lil white girls calling their shoes ghetto and the like.

Not cute!

And girl yes, I do Project Runway recaps weekly so come on back on Thursday to read it :) You liked Zulema's dress? ok glad someone did.

Katie Couric said "ghetto" on the Today Show? Shut the hell up....

I hate you forever for the assembling the "Black Coalition" with African drums and smoke signals... Ha ha ha ha ha! Girl, I'm too through with you.

But these people need to realize that having one black friend does NOT make them an expert on the race. Never has, never will. Ever. Ever life. For the rest of all time. It's not going to happen.

And I co-sign with you and J... just one black friend...? but they most likely have the same personality as you...? Hmmm... questionable. :-\

as spokesperson for the twenty-acres-and-a-backhoe (20-A-B) branch of the black coalition, i am here to inform you of our intention to have head of branch security, dwayne "the rock" johnson, layeth the smacketh down on katie for letting the words "ghetto" escape her lips while on-air. if there are any other of our paler cousins requiring castigation for this transgression, please contact mr. johnson at branch headquarters.

also, i'm pleased to announce that vin diesel is commencing his final negrofication class this month and will be joining mr. johnson on the security team as a full-fledged member.

lastly, alicia keys has recently replaced mariah carey as official branch chanteuse, as ms. carey has been recently deemed unfit to remain affiliated with the coalition after her 15th music video where she sings to, dances with, and runs from coalition members only to land in the arms of a former oppressor at the conclusion of the video. as ms. carey had been previously warned, this type of behavior is counterproductive to the aims of the coalition and will not be tolerated by its members, even those in branch 20-A-B.

axé is the portuguese spelling of "ashay" (it's used in candomblé, the brazilian version of santería, which is the syncretism of christianity with traditional yoruba/west african religious beliefs).

also, most of the lounge/chillout music out there incorporates more african musical elements than most of the current "negro" music on american radio. but you cain't tell black folks nothin if aruh kelly ain't singin it.

Jameil said...

i can't stand r. kelly. why is one of our community's most venerated musicians a child abuser and everyone seems to have forgotten?

Okay I followed you from Karamale's site. This was funny as hell. I had a conversation with some white folks today about "why black folks do x, y, z". I asked them why white folks ask dumb a** questions and think that b/c they sit with me during lunch they get an automatic pass to ask me stupid stuff.

Okay, that was a rant, but at any rate...your post was hilarious!
