i don't watch tv

This is one of the most annoying things you can ever say to me. No, it's not primarily because I work in tv, though I'm sure that has something to do with it. It's primarily because there is an air of assumed superiority in that statement. But you know what they say happens when you assume.

Guess what? Watching tv does not make you better than everyone else. You are missing out. How do you keep up with what's going on in the world? Yes there's the internet and newspapers, but seeing things unfold in front of your eyes. Until news outlets have consistent live, streaming video on websites, what's the point? I know I'm very tv heavy, but that's my medium. I love it. Moving pictures and sound speak infinitely. Don't get me wrong, I'm an avid reader, but when it comes to news? SHOW ME.

In the newsroom, there are about 15 elevated televisions assigned to ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC, CNN, Fox News, whatever feeds or live shots we're rolling on, the Pittsburgh Cable News Channel, and on and on, but those are the main ones. Then there are the tvs at each desk. I love it. If there's something on, I look at the topic bar and decide what I want to watch instantly. I also love seeing how each station is treating each story.

I wasn't always a tv person. Now I can't live without it. You HAVE to stay informed about the world around you. If not, it will pass you by. And don't think I only watch news... well I guess you already know that, huh? Well... you do now! Ha! So watch tv. Even if you can't watch my show. Thanks! *rolling eyes because this topic really annoys me*

yeah, tellum why you MADD, son! Seriously, I'm not really much of a TV fan myself, but to say I don't watch it completely would be a sin before God. I'm starting to dig Ugly Betty a lot, but PTI and Around The Horn are still my programs of choice.

You know I love TV too, I think it complements what I read, what I hear, and what I see. Now I don't believe everything I see, nor everything I read, and hear.

I think there needs to be a sense of balance with regards to the sources for information.

T.V. has definitely schooled me on some things, in a way that some other mediums just can't touch.

Morning and evening local news is a very important way to start your day. NPR supplies the rest of my news. But I don't get why people think that makes them better than somebody else either.
Also, I'm addicted to the Discovery and History Channel.

joy... i actually like npr. their stories are told very well. there seriously IS something for everyone. when we first got cable, my dad was amazed there was a sci-fi channel. he watches it all the time.

chris... hahahahaha. not a tv fan? hmph! lots of people are really into ugly betty. i love pti, too but around the horn is the worst.

cnel... balance of course is essential. you would be a fool to believe everything you come in contact with.

vdizzle... history channel is fab!

I don't watch tv. Not because I think I am better than anyone or any of that other stuff. I just don't.

Sorry some of you feel that what I do is sinful.

even worse Jameil:

i dont own a TV! Go on let me have it!

(yes i enjoy living in a bubble)

lady.. hahahahaha. its ok. i'm just saying when people say it and then look at you like "follow that up with something more intelligent, i know you can't," that ish is annoying.

dream.. hahaha. i didn't mean for it to come off as i hate all people who don't watch tv b/c i don't!

ai... that sounds funny too "i don't watch as much as i should." i don't necessarily think life is void w/o tv but a lot of people our age have no idea what's going on in the world if they don't watch tv.

duck.. awww. i like news radio. *hugs*

southern... precisely!! hahahahahaha

ace... ugh! the shock and horror! i don't even know how to respond. you actually kind of inspired this b/c you made a comment on an earlier post. but believe it or not, i actually work w/someone who says they don't watch tv... wtf?! you're on air and you don't watch tv? that's ridiculous.

its funny, i know i sound like a rightous hippy or something, but im really not. I spend my day in a recording studio and at night im usually gigging. i very rarely have the time to watch TV, i have absolutely nothing against it. I *do* however have a netflix membership and watch things on a computer occasionally. im a bit of a work-aholic.

you know my sit. i have a tv but no cable and in tally, you can't even get local channels with an antenna. its all or nothing but... when i do go home, mom makes me watch CNN. how? she monopolizes the TV till she goes to work. does it count if you only watch style, TLC, and food network?

What I can't stand is the people who tell me "when I have kids they are not going to watch TV". It bugs me when the person who says it watches tv or when they say "you let your kids watch tv?!" like they are watching unedited Eddie Murphy stand up or Cinemax late at night. (For the record, lots of Disney, Nickelodeon, Noggin types of stuff) TV has a wealth of information on it and honestly, these are the kind of people who probably are not much to hang out with either. :) It may be commercialized (at one person told me) but my kids are not homeschooled and we do listen to the radio so it stands to reason they are going to hear some stuff no matter what. It's MY job to tell them what's right and wrong. Okay, I am through venting..lol

ace... i figured it was something like that.

stace... honey you know i love those stations more than the next person... but you have GOT to watch something else. tally is that wackness!! good riddance!

you love it! the distance... the fog... whatever. maybe you you little track star! hahahahahaah!!

joy... that's right. everyone make amends! kiss and mke up kids!

speak princess!! girl, you ripped it. love it. if they go to school they will hear 15xs more nonsense. you (not you specifically but in general) are doing your children a disservice by keeping them from tv. you will be answering so many questions your head will spin the first day of school. it is appalling what some children are exposed to. i'm def. not of the let them watch all the pg-13 and r movies they want no matter what age, but like you said, noggin/disney/nick? stop trippin!

I agree totally -- everyone says that in such a snobbish way "I really don't watch that much TV" which means "I have more important things to do with my time like reading about philosophy and politics and the world around me then be like you and sit on my couch and watch tv shows as if they were somehow important."

I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE DO THAT TOO!

This is something personal. Jameil, please understand I got love for you, but TV makes people lazy....

Being that I am a newspaper reporter I've seen another side. Sooo many times, as a news reporter, I will (un)cover, something interesting or juicy only to have the TV stations repackaging EVERYTHING I just put out the day before… Stealing my thunder.

I haven't had much experience in TV and my next move will prolly be back to radio. And maybe I'm a geek, but I love NPR. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that we live in a microwave world. Everything is instant. In some ways that's not a bad thing, but Patience is still a virtue, and nowadays it’s a rarity.

Earlier someone mentioned something about balance. Now that is MOS DEF wassup. Getting info from all four major mediums (print, radio, tv, inet) is cool to me. But depending indefinitely on TV bothers me.

As far as me watching TV, I do my share, Mostly it’s done on the weekend. There are certain channels I don't watch simply because I've had enuff of pop culture. On the other hand I can't seem to get enuff of the History & National Geographic channels, not to mention A&E. But that's if I'm not watching some type of news. NBC's line up this fall is amazing. Heroes is my absolute fave.

The impact of images just cannot be measured. Our society needs tv. It is an important tool that allows the dissemination of information

lola... damn that blogger!!!

rell... exactly!! its not that folk don't watch tv. its that air of i'm sooo much better than you. blaaaaaaaah.

jenn... i'm with you on the laziness bred by tv. and i would never advocate getting all of your info from tv. but to not watch at all? what is that abt?

epsi... tv has seriously transformed the dissemenation of info.
